In the fall of 2018, I left my corporate career for good.  Ironically, at that time, I believed I had my dream job - Community Education Manager with a major healthcare company.  I had a corporate expense account and an office view of the Detroit River; there was even a waterfall complete with fancy lighting in the center of the building where I worked.  Before securing the position, I worked briefly as a substitute teacher to make ends meet after losing my most profitable community education contract with one of the nation's last free-standing hospitals.  I enjoyed teaching, and it helped pay the bills, but I did not intend for it to be permanent.  That is until I received "the call" in the fall of 2018.  The public school district where I lived desperately needed a middle-school teacher in the inner city.  They requested me, and I could not turn them down.  So began my journey as an urban school educator.  Even as a former firefighter/ paramedic (my first career), educating urban scholars is the most challenging job I have ever held; however, I love it most.  I have also discovered the most incredible perks I could ever receive - PURPOSE AND IMPACT.  My mission is to energize and inspire teachers to teach with creativity, innovation, and tenacity.  My goal as an educational administrator and higher education teaching professional is to make a marked difference in students' lives by propelling them beyond higher education and empowering them to achieve heights they would not have otherwise envisioned.

Higher Education Teaching Certification

The landscape of K-12 education is constantly changing in the United States—our student population is a microcosm of the American population. Educators must be instructionally versatile and capable of impacting a diverse student body. Culturally relevant teacher preparation is essential in equipping educators to address instructional needs holistically.

The following artifacts address teacher training needs; each unit reflection provides insights from an urban education perspective. The syllabus is for a proposed undergraduate course titled Urban Education: Insights from African American Psychology, Critical, and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy.
